ICONS is supported by an advisory board and was commissioned by Culture Online, which was part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport until 2007.
Who's Who in the ICONS team
Jane Finnis, Director, ICONS Online Ltd
Jane is responsible for the management of ICONS Ltd, the company that keeps this site going. She is also the Director of the Culture24, ICONS’ parent organisation, as well as the Chair of the advisory board that scrutinises the running of the ICONS site, making sure things run well and according to best practice within the cultural publishing sector.
Jon Pratty, Editor, ICONS
Before leaving for pastures new, Jon was Head of Content at Culture24 and had responsibility for day-to-day editorial management of ICONS. He also developed content partnerships and new strategic directions for ICONS.
Aline Tanner, Journalist, ICONS
Prior to leaving on a trip around the world, Aline had the responsibility of planning, researching, writing and editing the final 26 Icons that brought the Icons project to fruition - 100 Icons of England. Before taking on the ICONS project, Aline was assistant editor for Organic Life magazine and prior to this, she completed the NCTJ magazine journalism course at Brighton City College in 2004. A degree in Visual Culture combined Aline’s interest in English and the arts.
Three journalists assisted Aline in writing up the final ten Icons; Marian Cleary, Dawn Marshallsay and Tara Booth.

Stuart Walton, Senior Writer
Stuart has been a journalist and author since 1991. His books include Out Of It: A Cultural History of Intoxication (2001) and Humanity: An Emotional History (2004). He is also a wine and food writer, and has written introductory guides to wine and cocktails, as well as writing a large annual chunk of the Good Food Guide.
Emily Sands, Writer
Emily has a degree in Visual Culture, and completed the
NCTJ Magazine Journalism course at City College Brighton in 2005. She was
also the first Renaissance Student Writer for the 24 Hour Museum.
Peter Chrisp, Writer
Peter Chrisp has been a professional writer for the past 15 years, writing some 80 books on historical subjects for young readers. After studying and teaching English literature, he began writing about history while working as a researcher at the Mass-Observation Archive at Sussex University. His books cover a wide range of subjects, including Victorian crime, whaling, Shakespeare, dinosaur hunters and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Jane Utting, Sub-Editor
Jane has worked on a number of London-based magazines and newspapers
over the past 10 years, including Marie Claire, the Daily Mail, the
Daily Express, the Sunday Times, the Evening Standard and Sainsbury's
Magazine. Now working as a freelance writer, sub editor, proofreader
and copy editor, she returned to Brighton in summer 2004 after
back-packing round the world for 10 months. Jane, a history graduate, started her career in Brighton in the early-1990s, working as a news reporter for the Argus.
