Icons of the Environment

Congratulations to the humble hedgehog. It is now officially the top Icon of the Environment in England and Wales.  It came top in our Icons of the Environment poll, staged in partnership with The Environment Agency to celebrate its 10th anniversary.  Thank you to all of you who nominated and voted in the poll.

The Top 5 results in the poll are the hedgehog, otter, red squirrel, oak tree and bluebell woods. England and Wales' Top 10 iconic species are the: Hedgehog (No1), otter (No 2), red squirrel (No 3), oak tree (No 4), robin (No 6), brown trout (No 7), red kite (No 8) water vole (No 10), barn owl (No 11) and sparrow (No 12).

Thousands took part by nominating a range of possible icons, including places of natural beauty, native animals and plants, ecological projects and environmental campaigns. You can still browse through all the nominations that have been made - they make fascinating reading.
