The salmon
The presence of salmon is a sure sign that a river is improving and able to support all sorts of life and biodiversity. Salmon can be found in rivers up and down the country from the River Dart to the River Tyne and are coming into other rivers that have not supported them for 100 years. A harbinger of an enhanced environment for wildlife and a better quality of life for everyone.
From the Environment Agency:
"We are required to protect salmon stocks under the EU Habitats Directive and Water Framework Directive. As a species of 'special interest', we not only protect salmon but 'further their conservation'. So, for example, whenever we consider requests to allow waste water into rivers or to do physical works in the river, we consider whether this can be done in such a way as to improve salmon stocks. We also maintain, develop and improve salmon fisheries in England and Wales. This means we contribute not just to protecting and improving life for salmon but also for the people and businesses that depend on salmon fishing. We also license all salmon fishing, control poaching, and work with many partners to improve habitat quality for salmon."

Seeing a salmon leaping a weir is a special sight indeed. You wait and watch, hoping to see one. Suddenly the silver streak rises from the watery ferment, as if straining with all its might to reach a better place. Your spirit rises with its gravity-defying vault.
Peter Johnson
The sight of Atlantic Salmon in our country's rivers is a sign of health and hope. The decline of this fish is the fault of man, however man can have a massive impact in its return. There is no greater site than a Salmon living up to its Latin name Salmo Salar - the Leaper.
Paul Hopwood
The continuing presence of salmon in our rivers is a demonstration that not only do we say we care about the environment but we are actually putting our words into actions. Future generations will judge our success or failure.
