The continuing presence of salmon in our rivers is a demonstration that not only do we say we care about the environment but we are actually putting our words into actions. Future generations will judge our success or failure.

Salmon and fishing for them meens everything to me I have just fished the Nith in Dumfries and caught two both returned to carry on spawning.I get just as much pleasure seeing them take off after recovery. What I am impressed with most fishermen are quite content to return salmon these days.It is a big improvement in attitude.

The salmon will die out if our rivers and seas are not kept in very good order. If the salmon survives then thousands of other small creatures will also survive .

The salmon to me means the eventual loss of fishing for the vast majority of anglers, the same anglers who through their rod licences have cortibuted to the cleaning up of our rivers. Why do the EA put so much emphasis on the salmon? Have they/you ever taken time out to ask the majority of anglers, who incidentally are the only body in England and Wales who use the rivers pay to do so, what they really want? It's certainly not salmon that's for sure.

The Atlantic salmon returns annually to rivers throughout the British Isles to breed and as such is a wild species readily available for all to see, recognise and marvel at its beauty and life cycle. It only thrives where the environment is right. The increase in numbers over recent years is a clear indication of better river cleanliness and system improvement.

The sight of Atlantic Salmon in our country's rivers is a sign of health and hope. The decline of this fish is the fault of man, however man can have a massive impact in its return. There is no greater site than a Salmon living up to its Latin name Salmo Salar - the Leaper.
