Cheryl Cole painted as 'Angel of the North'

An artist has created an image of Girls Aloud pop star Cheryl Cole as the iconic Angel of the North statue.

Lee Jones portrayed the singer, who is originally from Newcastle, dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief to stem a flow of tears.

The hand-painted Angel is almost reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s silk-screen Marilyn Monroe pop art images, with its pink background and black outline.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Angel of the North, which was sculpted by Antony Gormley and it is featured as one of the top 100 ICONS of England.

The original statue was erected on the site of a disused colliery overlooking the A1 in Gateshead, which is close to where Cheryl Cole grew up.
