Sherwood Forest: living legend set to have a makeover?

One of the most famous and historic forests in the world could undergo an impressive modern day facelift if the team responsible for the ‘Sherwood: the Living Legend’ project win their proposal bid of £50m from the BIG Lottery fund. Nestled at the very heart of England in between Nottingham and Sheffield, Sherwood Forest has long been a national treasure, and hopes for safeguarding and developing this ancient heritage site includes an environmentally sustainable new visitor complex.

Whether the project makes it through to the final stage and then on to win the bid all depends on how the public vote in the national TV lottery in December.

If the bid is successful, 'Make', a London based firm of architects lead by Ken Shuttleworth will design and build the complex incorporating four core values inspired by none other than Robin Hood throughout. These include: promoting sustainable living, championing the community, capturing myths and magic and respecting the past to influence and inspire the future. One design proposal - The Tree (made from sustainable, locally sourced and natural materials) will feature an exhibition space, a cafe, shop, tourist information point and tree top walkway. Its 'roots' will hold an education centre, conference space and cycle hire shop. The ‘tree top’ will provide space for a restaurant and viewing gallery, while surrounding grounds will feature picnic areas, car parking, plus a range of outdoor educational and demonstration areas.

It’s hoped that if the project comes into fruition, the complex’s world-class facilities will encourage an upsurge in tourists, thus benefiting the local area, economy and employment. With plans that are bold and ambitious yet sensitive to the forest’s environment, this project has high hopes for bringing the legends of Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood into the modern age.
