LS Lowry artwork to be auctioned

A painting of a street scene by LS Lowry is to be sold at auction in London in May 2009.

The street scene, bought by Cambridgeshire County Council in the 1940s, is expected to sell for between £300,000 and £500,000.

Entitled A Market Place, Berwick-upon-Tweed, it shows LS Lowry’s infamous "stick people" walking around the town.

The council announced the sale of the 1935 painting to raise money for its cultural programme.

The highest price paid for a Lowry at auction was £3.7m for Good Friday, Daisy Nook, which was sold by Christie's in June 2007.
