What's new on the website

What isn’t new? ICONS’ new online collection has inspired the nation. Hundreds of thousands of people are enjoying nominating, commenting and voting for and against icons. Thousands of new nominations were received after our launch and though many are duplicates, there are already about 500 new nominations to vote on. The ICONS team has been busy posting thousands of comments on the site, too, so there is plenty to grab your interest. Oh, and check out the new quiz – you could win an iPod.

Icons Around The World

ICONS ‘r Us! An Italian newspaper put it best when it said people in England have stopped talking about the weather, all they talk about now is ICONS! Our office has been swamped with reports of radio and TV coverage and newspaper cuttings from all over England and all round the globe, including India, Russian, Australia and USA. Spanish and Italian TV both played copy-cat and asked viewers to pick their favourite icons for each country.

Icons Around The Country

The BBC’s Culture Show's search for the nation’s favourite design icons in a special TV/online poll had echoes with our own project. Interestingly, Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen nominated the telephone kiosk and Jenny Eclair the E-type Jaguar, which have already both been nominated on the ICONS site. Jeremy Paxman suggested the Spitfire, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary and is one of our first Icons of England. The winner will be chosen from the design icons finalists - the Spitfire, Concorde and the Underground Tube Map.

Help Us Create The Portrait

Are you keen to help us paint a portrait of England?  Give us details of stories/documents/photographs that you could contribute. This will help us illustrate different icons, particularly some of the hundreds of nominations we are receiving from you every day. If you send or email us photographs, please only send those you have taken yourself. We also need you to give us written or emailed permission to use the photograph for the life of the ICONS website (via email or in writing). Send to info@icons.org.uk. Let us know, too,  if you would be interested in becoming a volunteer photographer in your local region. Thanks very much.

Icons Pick 'n' Mix

Try the Lucky Dip selected option in nominations if you want to view a strange hotch-potch of choices including the V sign, Harold Wilson’s pipe, Aldlestrop station sign, the Christmas Number One, Net Curtains, Mad Dogs and Englishmen, the Garden Shed, Weather symbol on the BBC for light rainy showers, Wallace and Gromit and Knotted Handerchiefs on the beach. It is fascinating reading!
