Angel of the North
Olympic gold medallist Jonathan Edwards has nominated one of our first 12 icons, the majestic Angel of the North sculpture which stands at the gateway to Tyneside.
“I
would like to nominate the Angel of the North as my icon. Hardly
original, but it is not simply just a piece of fantastic contemporary
art, but a symbol of the cultural regeneration of Gateshead and
Newcastle.”
Jonathan has strong connections to the north east.
He read Physics at
Vann Mildert college in Durham and now lives in Newcastle with his partner and two sons.
The 20-metre high steel Angel
of the North stands on a hilltop which is clearly visible from the A1
and the east coast mainline – routes Jonathan is familiar with when he
makes the regular journey to London.
