CCTVs They are an assault on our privacy. They are an assault on our freedom. They are an assault on our dignity. They assault us by intimidation. Why are we being punished this way? I would not even subject criminals to this level of surveillance. When will we be trusted again to move about our country without being put under surveillance? How on earth have we let this nightmare happen to us?

CCTV, ASBO's, and the looming prospects of compulsory ID cards all spell out what is frighteningly obvious to me: Britain is steadily turning into a police state. How much more are we all expected to tolerate? Well, in any case, at least the revolution will be televised, I'm sure.

The CCTV image is an Orwell icon. It says you live in a Police State, we're watching you, and the stark reality of my out of reach position is that 'I'm' not here for YOUR benefit, except by accident, or tremendous and costly persistence on your part. So smile and bug off before I call the database.

CCTV is embematic of the surveillance state which England is becoming. It is an icon of what England is becoming and what England fought against for many many years. It is an icon of the decreasing freedom which England is suffering, an icon of the threat to the English individual culture from the state and collectivisation. It is an icon of the waste of spending on inefficient solutions for perceived law and order problems, an icon of the empowerment of the state and the disenfranchisement of the individual and personal responsibility.

Margaret Thatcher said that "there is no such thing as society". Too right!! We are all terrified of each other; afraid to walk the street without the spy cameras there to watch us and discourage those evil others who want to do us harm. It's an illusion. The number of "evil others" is no greater than it has ever been. The CCTV camera is an icon because it symbolises the paranoia and fear of the government that there may be some aspect of our lives over which they have no control. When the authorities can track our every movement through CCTV and id cards, how long will it be before we have to notify them of our movements in advance? And after that, it cannot be long before we also need their permission.

As an icon which repressents our paranoia and lack of trust I don't think this is something to be proud of at all.

Comment on CCTV

Absolutely, I too feel proud and, yes, honoured by all the attention being focussed on me. Others may see Orwellian bug-a-boos, I see my friend...

My 18 year old daughter got a bit nervous on the top deck of her bus home from Birmingham city centre to Handsworth when a young her age came up the bus towards her, passed her, and then duct taped the buses' CCTV camera, then giving her a complicit smile returned to the back of the bus and lit up a joint. Incidentally I detest the smell of marijuana but was relieved that this turned out the reason for taping the camera. I am an ultra respectable college lecturer who on several peaceful demonstrations (vs the Iraq War, the Birmingham Northern Relief Road and the Newbury bypass) have been filmed by the police. On these occasions I introduced myself by name directly to camera.
