I've owned about 10 trannys and converted 7 of them to camper/day vans and have never found a more reliable/fun to drive van or car come to that.Just bought a replacement for my CI camper(78),a 1990 mk 3 rare Spencer sherwood motorhome and after 2 years trannyless its great to be back in the saddle. And my old CI is still truckin and parks in the same yard as me,Hows that for reliability eh?.Gray. PS anyone got a set of bull/crash bars for it?

I grew up in Scotland in the 60's and 70's and the Ford Transit was seemingly everywhere. We moved to Australia in '75 and they were equally as popular. Now no one wants to sell them. I have been looking for two years for an early one and cannot get one

It has to be a british icon, you can't beg, borrow, or steal one in the US.

It is as much as an icon as the E-Type Jag, or the Mini because it is British through and through, any product that sells 5 million has got to be worthy of iconic status

The Ford Transit bore the ubiquitous ;White Van Man'. And nothing epitomises England more than the perilous WVM. He of the chip butty and newspaper on the dashboard, who thinks it's perfectly reasonable to be driving a dangerous, smoking vehicle at a speed of triple figures with one hand on the mobile phone and the other gesticulating wildly at other roadusers. England just wouldn't be England without either the Transit or him!

For over 40 years the Ford Transit van has been part of every day life in England. It takes our children to School in mini busses, delivers goods we need to our houses and even comes out and picks us up if we are in bad health in its ambulance form. If our car has brakes down nine times out of ten it will be a Ford Transit that comes to the rescue. An amazing amount of people in England use the van to get there goods and themselves to work ever day. Along with all this 1000s of people have been employed in the England making this amazing part of Vehicle history. Fully Designed at Dunton / Essex Built in Southampton sold to the world. A true English product carrying the flag to over 40 countries. While at the same time bringing millions of pounds in revenue into the country. Look at any film on TV or The silver screen made over the last 40 odd years that has shots of a road or car park and you will see a Transit van in it. Be it a comedy like Porridge, a block buster film like The Avengers, or even a Robbie Williams pop video Eternity. What more could you ask for in an Icon. 5 million people can?t be wrong and that?s how many Transits have been on the roads since 1965 to the present day. It is without a doubt our backbone and its name is embedded in the heart of out country.

Ford Transit has been Britain's favourite van for 40 years. It has been built in Britain in Southampton, Merseyside and Essex for 40 years. It delivers everything from the builder to build our houses to the internet delivery van bringing our dinner to the table.

They are everywhere, we've all encountered them, been intimidated and infuriated by them.
