This defines the Brit on holiday. One need not ask his country of origin as this is the ultimate statement of being British. Often accompanied by light coloured socks and sandals with a hint of lobster on the back and legs.

Our Island home features so many wonderful beaches and this is the cheap entertainment for everyone. Our Anglo-Saxon skins need protection, hence the genesis of the knotted handkerchief on the head. String vests, now out of style, were what our mothers told their sons to wear, so they kept them on.

Okay, picture the lovely golden sands of a South Coast beach on a hot English summer's day. Got it ? Now take a look along it. He's there somewhere. Can you see him ? Yes, there. On the red stripy deckchair. In front of the nylon windbreak. There he is: still in his shirt, tie and tanktop. The definitive British male at the beach. What's that on his head ? Of course, the hankie. Lovingly knotted in each corner. And on his feet ? Nothing of course ! Sandals and socks have been flung aside (then picked up and placed neatly below the deckchair) to reveal to bare, white feet with 5 inches of exposed, lily-white hairless lower leg. Ah, the English Adonis ! Look upon him, ye olive-skinned foreigners and admire his greatness. ...Admiring his greatness does not involve pointing and laughing...

The current score is 50% for, 49% agains't. What has happened to the other 1%? I think comedic attempts at polls are a British institution
