I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue
First broadcast in 1972, the immensely popular Radio 4 panel game, I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, represents for its loyal audience of two million regular listeners the epitome of English humour. Its cast of regulars, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, Barry Cryer and chairman Humphrey Lyttelton (not forgetting the late and much-missed Willie Rushton), have been joined over the years by a host of prominent British comics, including Stephen Fry, Jeremy Hardy and Paul Merton.
The format is as silly as can be. The panellists are instructed to play a series of party games, such as gargling along to the melody of Brahms’ Lullaby, or delivering a summary of the second world war in the style of a parish magazine. Although there are scorers, most popularly “the lovely Samantha”, no points are awarded. The centrepiece of the show is the game Mornington Crescent, named after the Northern Line tube stop, the rules of which remain a mystery wrapped in an enigma.
