The worlds first postagestamp. The PENNY BLACK was issued in England in 1840. This concept of a stamp with mucilage on it which could be affixed to an envelope and for which an individual prepaid postage costs was proposed by Rowland HIll to parliament.

as a philatelist I must congratulate the person who nominated this as an icon,this was the stamp that started it all. every stamp collector,whether or not he /she collects GB,is aware of this stamp,or has one.
