My Australian wife can never understand my obsession with mushy peas and chips - stodge she tells me. But what stodge looks or tastes the same and can provide such satisfaction on a cold damp day? It just stands out every time you serve it.

When we moved to Yorkshire from New Zealand in 1999, the dinner ladies at my son's school couldn't believe he didn't like mushy peas. He couldn't understand (and nor can I) why you would ruin a good pie by pouring mushy peas over the top. Only in England! They are an absolute icon.
