Comment on Policeman's Helmet

As a former police officer in the still British territoy of Bermuda I can tell you that 'British' style helmets are also worn there (as, I believe, they still are in Gibraltar, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man). I put British in inverted commas as in the UK only English and Welsh forces wear these types of helmet (known as the 'Custodian' or 'Centurion'). Some Scottish forces used to wear them but haven't done so for many years, and the Northern Irish force has never worn them.

For all its faults British policing is still among the worls best. Officers have been wearing distinguished headgear for 150 years and although it has been copied arond the world, the Police Helmet is an instantly recognisable badge of office for nationals and visitors alike.

As a retired Police Constable I always found that visitors to these shores, even Police officers from other countries were always fascinated by them. Wanting to know their history, even trying them on.

Although the Police helmet may have been introduced first in the Metropolitan Police in 1863, it is a British icon, rather than one peculiar to England. Incidentally, while the Metropolitan Police Act 1829, is generally thought of as the first British Police Force, this title rightly belongs to Glasgow whose police force was established by the Glasgow Police Force Act of 1800. By 1829, 10 other Scottish cities had their own publicly funded police forces.

I consider the icon of the "Bobbie Helmet" as one of the most recognizable figures all over the world. Millions of people automatically connect it with England. In fact i was very surpised when i discovered that it was not in the list yet
