The ability to read a map relies on having spatial awareness. This can be as basic as understanding that if the road or path on the map is going one way, you need to either a) imagine the map version of the road going in that direction or better still b) turn the map round so you, the map, your friends, the dog and Uncle Tom Cobbly are all headed in the same direction.
