Things To Do
Lots of fun things to do inspired by Alice.
- Both Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, are full of games – the first features playing cards, the second an unusually violent chess-match. So why not have a game? Or if you’re feeling brave – and the weather is fine – how about a spot of croquet? It’s more vicious than you imagine, even without the flamingos and hedgehogs…
- Have you ever tried making a jam tart? (Like the Queen of Hearts.) It’s pretty simple: find out how here. Or if that sounds too much like hard work, you could follow the example of the Knave of Hearts – just find the Queen of Hearts and steal hers!
- The Mad Tea-Party is perhaps the most famous scene in Alice; why not have your own? You can read about tea-time rituals here, but you may find that the maddest tea-parties don’t exactly follow the rules… You might want to make your own hat for the occasion. Or, like the characters in the story, you could write your own tea-party versions of nursery rhymes. But please don’t try to put a dormouse in a teapot – it’s not nice.
- Or how about an Alice-themed birthday party? Suitable for anyone under the age of ten. Or older if you’re strange enough...
Watch one of the many film or cartoon versions; or how about Terry Gilliam's 1977 fantasy satire film Jabberwocky, inspired by Lewis Carroll's poem? - How about writing your own nonsense rhymes, or your own versions of nursery rhymes?
- Dozens and dozens of great illustrators have produced their own pictures to accompany the Alice stories including Arthur Rackham, Helen Oxenbury, Anthony Browne and Mervyn Peake. Why not try creating your own? You can send them to us, here.
