The Angel of the North

A TV star

In a very short space of time the Angel of the North has become a symbol of Gateshead, the North, public and contemporary art and of urban regeneration. It has featured on the big and small screen several times in the few years since its completion.

Here are just a few examples:

The One And Only (2002)

This romantic comedy was dubbed “The Notting Hill of the North”, but ended up being a bit of a flop. Starring Patsy Kensit and Jonathan Cake, The One And Only was shot entirely on Tyneside. The story is mainly set on Newcastle’s Quayside, with key locations including the new Millennium Bridge and the Gateshead riverfront. One of the scenes – a wedding party – takes place on the top of the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. The Angel of the North acts as a powerful symbol in the film. One of the most moving scenes is when an adopted child, Mgala, is taken away. The Angel seems to have special powers to sort out Mgala’s problems.

Purely Belter (2000)This bitter-sweet film stars Tim Healy and Kevin Whately. It is shot almost entirely on Tyneside using more than 50 locations. Two lads dream of owning a Newcastle United season ticket, but have no money. One of the most prominent locations in the film is the Angel of the North, which the boys see as their own angel: “the guardian of toe-rags”.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (2002) The most famous Geordie TV series of all featured the Angel of the North several times in the episode first screened on April 28, 2002. The lads were reunited for the first time in years to mark the passing of old friend Oz, but then he turned up at his own wake!
