The Angel of the North

Antony Gormley - Angel Sculptor

Antony Gormley, creator of the Angel of the North, was born in 1950 in London, where he still lives and works.

After studying at three of the principal London art schools in the 1970s, he had his first solo shows at the Serpentine and Whitechapel galleries in 1981.

Among Gormley’s other sculptural works for public places are:

  • Sound II, Winchester Cathedral crypt, 1986.

  • Sculpture for Derry Walls, Derry, Northern Ireland, 1987.

  • Iron Man, Victoria Square, Birmingham, 1993.

  • Site Of Remembrance, Oslo Holocaust Memorial, Norway, 2000.

Antony Gormley won the prestigious Turner Prize in 1994, and was awarded an OBE for services to sculpture in 1997.
