In 1998, fans of Newcastle United managed to dress up the Angel of the North in a huge Magpies shirt, to urge their team on in their forthcoming battle with Arsenal in the FA Cup Final.
Angels in Art
The Angel of the North is in a longstanding tradition of angels in art. Religious artworks in particular, such as depictions of the sacrifice of Isaac or the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, draw on the stories of angelic messengers in the Bible for their subject matter.
