Comment on The Angel of the North

The artist who created it said that it would turn bronzy and smooth but in fact the only smooth place is on its feet were it has been "buffered" by people sitting on it! The rest is rusty and needs to be torn down and replaced. Possibly with a new statue...I hope the council will not let us be fleeced again!

I love the Angel of the North so much I have photographed it hundreds of times. I have put a few of my photographs on a web page for the world to see, look here = http://photographsbydp.homestead.com/AngelOfTheNorth.html

I was passing through gateshead on the 28/3/08 and this is the first time I've seen it, it's brilliant. I thought it looked great, maybe next time I'll go and see it properly - it was truly great to see.

The Angel of the North is a reminder to every generation that we have the best workers in the world. I feel that the 'Angel' is a tribute to all miners, shipbuilders, steel workers, engineers and their families, who have supported those working in such industries over the years. Truly the 'Angel' is an 'ICON' representing our history, our heritage. Art on Tyneside is brilliant, and the fact that many individuals come from around the world to view art projects like the 'Angel of the North', while simultaneously boosting our local economy has to be one mega bonus...I would like to compliment and say a big thank you to all who made it possible that 'The Angel of the North' came to Tyneside and not the Thames.

The angel of the north is a fabulous well engineered structure, welcoming into gateshead everyone who passes. It is as well known now as the Eifell Tower, the Statue of Liberty e.t.c., and long may it stand in its rightful place among the most famous icons of the world.

During construction of the area where the Angel was to be mounted, the steel work which was delivered to reinforce the concrete piles was too short. I was the welder who welded the lengths of steel together to the required length. So when you next visit the site and see the names of the companies who worked on the project you will see Express Group of Engineering, well that was who I was working for at the time. I was the one and only person from that company who worked on the Angel and guess who took all the credit...not me...

Although born in London my mother and father were from Swallwal and Wicham. I have been to see the Angel 3 times in the last 3 years and I get a feeling of being home. I have lived in New Zealand for the last 41 years.
