The Basics
The revival of "Doctor Who" in 2005 introduced a whole new generation to the adventures of the time-travelling eccentric. Their elders may well recall the Doctor’s debut in his first incarnation, played by William Hartnell, in 1963. Since then, nine other versions of the Doctor have come and gone, appearing and disappearing in the famous police-box, only being rudely interrupted when the BBC decided to bin the Doctor in the 1980s.
And then there’s that theme tune, probably the first electronic TV signature tune in the world, composed by Ron Grainer, and arranged at the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop by Delia Darbyshire in the days when synthesisers and digital recording were unheard of. It’s virtually an icon in its own right.
