Holbein's Henry VIII

Shakespeare on Holbein

In his history play Henry VIII, or All is True, Shakespeare acknowledges that Henry’s image had iconic resonances.

The speaker of the Prologue cautions the audience not to expect “a merry bawdy play,/ A noise of targets, or to see a fellow/ In a long motley coat guarded with yellow”.

These were precisely the characterisations of Henry they would already have been most familiar with – the hearty sexual appetite, the fondness for sporting tournaments, and the Holbein portrait.
