The World's Great Bridges

Bridge-building was one of the earliest forms of engineering in human history. The ability to span rivers and deep gorges represented a huge advance in the development of ancient civilisations. First and foremost, they made getting from A to B much easier, safer and less time-consuming. They facilitated the movements of trade and the marching of armies, and were built to last - as can be seen from the many ancient bridges still in existence today.
