1. A plaque near to The Midland Oak, located on the boundary between Lillington and Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, claims the tree marks the very centre of England.

2. More than 40 species of insects, including wasps, are responsible for the abnormal growths - galls - found on oaks

3. The oak is the national tree of Estonia, Germany, Moldova and the United States.

4. The purple hairstreak (Quercusia quercus) is the only butterfly whose larvae feed exclusively on oaks.

5. Tannin-rich oak bark is used for tanning leather.

6. It’s not only squirrels who bury acorns - woodpeckers also hide them underground!

7. In October 1993, at the invitation of the Bishop of Willesden, 50 members of St Barnabas Church, Kensington, established the Oak Tree Anglican Fellowship in the Acton area. Its name comes from a passage in Isaiah 61:3.

8. There are approximately 450 species of oak worldwide.

9. A mature oak tree can produce up to 50,000 acorns.

10. More than 300 species of lichen have been recorded growing on oaks.
