Biography
Darwin's work was a summary of all the most important findings in the field of evolution. Let us introduce you to some of his predecessors, and give you a flavour of the religious controversy that followed its first publication
The Origin of Species: the Basics
In 1859, one of the most important scientific breakthroughs of the 19th century was marked when Charles Darwin published "The Origin Of Species". The book was a summary of all that its author had observed on his voyages on the research ship Beagle, together with a masterly collation of existing tentative theories about evolutionary development.
Geology Prepares the Way for Darwin
After returning from the Galapagos in 1836, Darwin waited more than 20 years before publishing "The Origin of Species".
Theory and controversy
"The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" was first published in 1859. While the waves that the book made extended far beyond narrow scientific circles, its author Charles Darwin was by no means the first to propose that the various species of life on our planet are descended from other, distantly related forms.
