Revues

All of the British members of Monty Python began their comedy careers at the revue shows of their universities. Eric Idle, John Cleese and Graham Chapman found their feet at Cambridge’s Footlights, and Michael Palin and Terry Jones in satirical revues at Oxford University.

Boat Race

Every spring sees Oxford University Boat Club and Cambridge University Boat Club thrashing it out on the water to win the now legendary boat race. The course covers four miles and 374 yards of the river Thames, starting at Putney Bridge and finishing at Chiswick Bridge.

Christ's College

Charles Darwin, author of “The Origin of Species”, was sent to Christ’s College, Cambridge by his father who was worried about his son becoming a “ne’er do well”. Rather surprisingly, Darwin enrolled on a BA course to qualify as a clergyman.

University Press

In March 1879, the Philological Society made a deal with Oxford University Press, which agreed to publish the O.E.D. under the snappy title: 'A New English Dictionary On Historical Principals Formed Mainly On The Materials Collected By The Philological Society And With The Assistance Of Many Scholars And Men Of Science'.
