1. The role of the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991) was, according to www.imdb.com, originally offered to Richard E Grant. The role eventually went to Alan Rickman.

2. The naming of Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, which opened in April 2005, caused media controversy since Robin is now associated with the Nottingham area. Read more about rival claims to the legend's origins here.

3. The 1999 Blackadder Millennium TV Special Back And Forth featured a Lord Flasheart-like Robin Hood with Kate Moss as Maid Marion.

4. Trowell services, on the M1, was originally themed as a "village" in Robin Hood/Sherwood Forest-style. Opened in 1967, the eating areas were called Sheriffs Restaurant and Marion's Pantry.

5. The Robin Hood Battalion was formed as the 1st Nottinghamshire (Robin Hood) Volunteer Rifle Corps in 1859.

6. Robin Hood's bay is a small fishing town near Whitby, North Yorkshire.

7. Maid Marian was the lead character in the BBC children's comedy Maid Marian And Her Merry Men, written by Blackadder actor Tony Robinson and starring Kate Lonergan as Marian.

8. Robin, of Batman And Robin fame, is reported to have taken both his name and the style of his original costume from Robin Hood.

9. Traditionally, most of Robin Hood's Merry Men are depicted as being middle-aged, however Will Scarlet is usually younger - sometimes in his teens.

10. Two royal writs in 1417 refer to Robert Stafford, a Sussex chaplain who had assumed the alias of Frere Tuk.
