I would like to know in the old rules of scrumming whether they had the two flankers on each side off the srcum? And if so, what year were the two flankers included in the srcum?

It's second behind football and is derived from that game. How can we not have rugby included as an icon? It's as English as tea!

Rugby is definately an English Icon because, whilst it began in England, it has now spread to all parts of the globe. So much so that it is no longer English Icon, but an International Icon. And besides, it's the best sport in the world.

A game for everyone - all shapes, sizes, intellectual abilities, social standing, ethnic background and (both) sexes. A game which continues to reinforce the ethos of respect for authority. And a game where you can make friends for life.

As a game, it requires contribution from all members of a team, the tall, the short, the fast three quarter the trundling prop. It examines your inner self when competing against your opponent be it the physical direct confrontation of the front row or the slieght of hand or side step in the backs. It rewards you with an ethos that you make friends for life from your enemies, the teams you play the opponent you try to dominate is the player you form a bond with that transcends the 80 minutes of match time into the whole of life. It teaches you respect for your self, the opponents you play, the officials who referee the match and it is truly a game of two halves, half playing on the field, half the camaraderie of the rugby fraternity off the field.

Rugby is a true sportsmans game. It is played with passion and pride even at local club level. Tempers may fray during the game but when the final whistle blows hands are shaken and both sides enjoy a social drink together.Refferees are respected if not always agreed with. It is a true family sport enjoyed by all without the violence that mars soccer.

I am 5 feet 6 inches tall this is the only game where someone of my height can stand beside a giant and feel as tall because in rugby there is respect. a value that is sadly missing amongst some other sports. We play the game for the love of it not to win at all costs but to try our best and if the result goes our way thats a bonus. Rugby is a true reflection of a persons worth because there is respect for the referee, the rules, your fellow players and your opposing team. As a boy all I remember was being stuck in goal because I couldnt kick a ball. With rugby I felt part of a team and club and as a parent I now take my sons (6 & 9) to play a game where they play not just because they are good but because everybody gets a game no matter what their ability. Thats why rugby is an icon

Rugby should be included as an Englsih insititution, if not for all other valid reasons, for the fact that it means so much more than just 80 minutes sport to so many people in England. This sport really has the ability to unite men, women and children a like. I cannot imagine an english winter not standing in the rain for 80 minutes watching pure determination and self belief not mention fun - and thats just the minis!! Rugby is as English as the Monarchy..infact the royal family are fans! - Proff enough?!

Rugby is last true international bond amongst men, we as englishmen founded the sport like many others but now millions play it all over the world and all players, coaches, supporters and wives of are united the world over. What other sport or activity would you be able to land in a foreign land, call the local club and have a bed for the week under the understanding that you will buy a few beers and sing a few songs at the club at the weekend. Please don't let the game of friendship ever change!!!!!
