Sherlock Holmes means a great deal to me. I have been keen on him for more than 17 years my interest in him and Conan Doyle beginning when I was 13 years old. I do not agree that Doyle was mere inspired by Poe whan he created Holmes. He was also inspired by Collins's Sergeant Cuff and his roses and shares with Dickens's Bucket a fondness for disguises. When Conan Doyle was young he also read Dickens's Nicholas Nickleby as well as His Mystery of Edwin Drood as further shared with Dickens a passion for defending the undergog of Society as witness Doyles involvement and interest in The Oscar Slater and George Edalji Cases. Graham Greene was also a huge fan of Conan Doyle, and it would lovely if Conan Doyle was one day recognized on a par with Dickens, Austen and The Bronte sisters. Regards, Mikkel

Just wanted to say that Sherlock Holmes deserves to be recognized as an English icon. To me, he was much more than just an amazing detective. He was a wonderful person, and there was much more to him than met the eye. I will ever regard him as one of the best men there ever was. People may argue about whether or not he was real, but to me he is, and he will live on forever. I love him!

He is not only the greatest fictional character of all time, but a symbol of England recognisable the entire world over.

Because the image instantly suggests the UK (and a vivid image of 19th century London) all round the world - the books, films etc

Sherlock is a recognisable national figure, and though he was written by a Scotsman, he was written, and has subsequently been played, as an Englishman. Everyone equates the Deerstalker and pipe with one of our best loved figures and he is recognised internationally.

As the editor of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London's newsletter, 'The District Messenger', I'd say that Holmes means a great deal to me.

Everybody knows who he is. Google featured him recently on their home page - not many English icons get to be featured on Google's home page.
