SS Empire Windrush
On the buses
A very large number of those who arrived in England on the Windrush found their first job working on the buses; these jobs remained popular with successive waves of Caribbean immigrants, who just a few years later would find theirs on the first fleet of Routemasters.
Calypso
When the SS Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury in 1948, it had on board two of Trinidad's great calypsonians – Lord Kitchener and Lord Beginner. Notting Hill Carnival remains one of the few homes for indigenous calypso left in Britain.
Tilbury Docks
The steamship Empire Windrush brought the first generation of migrant workers from the Caribbean to England. It eventually docked at Tilbury in Essex on June 22 1948. Tilbury is located on the north bank of the river Thames at the point where it narrows to about 2,400 feet (732 metres) in width.
