Things to Do
Short of something to do? Want to get hands-on with the impact that the SS Windrush made on our lives? Here are a few suggestions from the ICONS team...
-
The Windrush brought Calypso to England, as you can read here.
Why not celebrate this by writing your own calypso song? Or (for those
less musically ambitious) why not find a calypso festival, or listen to
a calypso CD and hear for yourself what all the fuss is about
- Genealogy – tracing your family history – is one of the main
uses of the Internet. Why not have a go at tracking yours and see how
far you get? Your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and their
parents, and theirs before that: where did they come from? What did
they do? The Windrush is important as an emblem of the range of
communities who have settled in England over the centuries, families
from all over the world who have brought their traditions and added
them to the cultural melting-pot that is England today. Family bibles, if you have one, can also be a useful source of information.
- And talking about melting-pots...Among the countless things that
England has gained from the Caribbean immigrants of the 1940s and 1950s
are some mouth-watering recipes. Why not try rustling up a real
favourite? Find out how to make a great Jerk Chicken here.
