I detest the Archers. I was brought up listening to its banal theme tune and disappointing stories. As soon as I hear the dismal tune black clouds descend, and my arm stretches out for the off switch, flick! Sunlight returns and the world is a better place once again.

Where can I get a copy of the Archers signature tune? My cockatiels love it and fall off their perch with excitement every time it comes on Radio 4.(shaughnessymaxine@blueyonder.co.uk)

The longest-running soap in the world, it encompasses EVERYTHING about England. The music alone evokes England more even than "Jerusalem", being an everyday (twice) occurrence. Cups of tea, gossip, the corner store, snobbery, cricket, the Church of England and even gay couples. There is a bit of farming there too, but as with real English farming this has been marginalised. Yes, Radio 4 has been nominated, but this is what every foreign person should listen to in order to understand the English. It's the only thing I miss when I'm abroad. tumtetumtetumtetumtumtetiddleetum. If you're not humming the tune now then okay I'm wrong.

I hate the Archers - please let it fade away.

I honestly cannot stand the Archers. It has nearly ended my marriage as my wife is an ardent listener. Many a meal has been ruined because of the 7pm -"dom dee dom dee dom" infuriating signature tune. Surely the program is well past it's sell by date. I know I am probably fighting a losing battle in trying to get it banned but at least could we get rid of the idiotic signature tune . This would ease the pain a little. Is there anyone else who would support me in attempting to kill the program off ??

As with some other contributors I first heard the Archers when it started in 1951 (being four at the time) but the first event I think I registered was Grace's death in 1955 - though I do believe I perhaps remember Anthony William Daniel being born and that was in 1951! It kept me sane whilst 'marooned' in Wales and Germany with the Army in the early to mid-sixties; was essential listening (sitting in my car on the Mendips on Sundays) while farming myself in the late sixties, and it was seriously vital to continued my sanity through thirty odd years in the Police Force! Now I listen to recorded Omnibus editions on the CD player in my car whilst en route from work in Surrey to home in Hertfordshire. Having joined the Addicts when it first started (membership number 218) I have attended most functions and met the majority of the cast - though I did correspond with Norman Painting many years before that. I've won competitions (including a TV Gameshow where my prize was a day doing the 'spot' effects at Pebble Mill), and have received personal invitations from some who have become my friends. Meeting them has never spoiled it for me as most can be described as looking 'quite like' their characters. Have been an avid collector of all things 'Archers' and 'Ambridge' since those days in the Army, and exhibited same at an Archers event in Birmingham. I even have duplicate items for sale to like minded folk! It is well written, produced and acted and even having been into the studio on many occasions, when 'Barwick Green' strikes up I am transported to the green fields, cottages, farms, pubs and village streets of Borsetshire. Long, long may you continue - you are part of me. Thank you.

My family left England 47 years ago and since then, I've been living and have settled in Switzerland. Back then, Dan Archer was still around and I clearly remember Walter Gabriels gravelly voice. The Archers and their distinctive music definately brings back memories of my childhood. I missed several years of the story, but never miss it when I'm visiting "back home". Home in Switzerland now being a 200-year-old farmhouse makes the story that more closer to (my) real life. I try to keep up with the story through Internet. but I must find the books to bridge the gap of the first decades of the story...

I moved to New York City from rural England 5 years ago, and being able to listen "on line" and keep in touch with events in Ambridge is an absolute treat.

Suspect many others have mentioned this but, the Archers is now recorded at the BBC's Mailbox studios in Birmingham - BBC Pebble Mill sadly now having been vacated and pulled down. PS Like the idea of the Icons project very much.

I tuned in just as Shula, who I have learned to loath almost as much as I do Ruth Archer, found Doris dead in her chair. Since then it has been 20 or so years of screaming at the radio, swearing never to listen to such drivel again, and developing an almost demonic dislike for all Vicars of Ambridge. But at two minutes past seven tonight there I shall be, at the work surface getting dinner ready to the strains of Barwick Green.

I spent the first 50 years of my life switching off 'The Archers' as soon as I heard the tones of 'Barwick Green'. I started listening to the programme about six years ago while working at home and became hooked. Sometimes it infuriates me, especially when Wor Rooothie is too prominent, but at other times the plot and the acting are so gripping that I'm sorry that I came to the programme so late. Ed Grundy is addicted to crack cocaine - I'm addicted to 'The Archers' and that's almost as serious!
