Vintage Wireless and Television Museum

The museum has an ever-expanding range of radios, televisions, speakers and radiograms from the dawn of radio up to the last valve model ever made. The museum is made up of two buildings with 13 rooms and 1,300 wireless receivers on show, along with many display cabinets of components, artifacts.

There's also a period shop and a valve laboratory, enabling the manufacture of early Triode valves (the three electrode valve), plus workshops to demonstrate the manufacture of chassis, cabinets and associated parts for wireless construction.

Several examples of BBC equipment are on display and in numerous cases are working. Listening to The Archers will never be the same again!

Science Museum

The Science Museum holds a collection of more than 300,000 items, including the first jet engine, a reconstruction of Francis Crick and James Watson's model of DNA, some of the earliest remaining steam engines, a working example of Charles Babbage's Difference engine, and the first prototype of the 10,000-year Clock of the Long Now.

In 1922, a radio transmitter with the callsign 2LO was located in an attic in the Strand with aerials strung between towers on the roof. During this year, the BBC was set up. It took over the 2LO callsign and transmitter and opened with a broadcast from Marconi House on November 14.

The set of equipment which transmitted the BBC’s first-ever radio programme in 1922 was given to the Science Museum in 2002. Go and see this amazing piece of broadcasting history!
