Can anyone explain why certain TV series have a DCI in charge of murder investigations and others a DI. Examples:- DCI - Taggart, Dalziel & Pascoe, Ashes to Ashes (Hunt), Morse, Midsomer Murders and Prime Suspect. DI - Lynley, Frost, Lewis, The Sweeney, Gentle Touch I thoroughly enjoy all of the above programmes but cannot understand the police rank structures

Interesting to read how the perception of the service has changed (as does everything else), over the years. I think very acurately shown by the diferent tv. series.

I was a British Bobby for over thirty years until 2002. Sadly, they are a dying 'breed' being replaced by policing on the cheap.

The British Bobby was and to a certain extent still is a symbol of security and community spirit - sadly lacking today in some parts maybe, but The British Bobby was a unique icon of England for many years..

The British bobby is respected all over the world for his courtesy, effectivesness and ability to do his job. He is renowned as being incorruptible and is one of the few unarmed police patrols in the world. Although the uniform has changed over the years it is an easily recognisable one.

The true British Bobby is the envy of the world. You should not lose the bobby staus as they always appeared to handle the situations and added a human touch.
