Comment on Weather Forecasters

The weather is as it comes. It's the forecasters style which can be irritating. I noticed reference to 'the upcoming week' recently, as well as the more common 'temperature-wise'. However, I think Philip Avery may be trying hard to break his habit of using 'old' in a kind of folkesy style - as in 'it's been a funny old day'! Seriously, though, the forecasters really come across as very pleasant and personable, but should be advised that most listeners prefer a forecast to a performance and like plain, non-Americanised English.

What one topic of conversation are we all happy to discuss? Why, the weather of course! Although we all grumble about it, I am sure we secretly love its diversity. How boring it would be to live in a country where we knew what the weather would be the next day!

Brits are internationally renowned for there astute realisation of what the weather is doing, be it hot or cold or just right, anytime is a good time to tell all that the weather is displeasing.

Without the weather a lot of British people would have nothing to talk about. All four seasons acn be encountered in the same day. Without the British Weather these sceptred Isles would not be what they are today - heaven on earth and the envy of all foreigners

Because talking about the weather is the No1 English topic of conversation. Where would we be without it? We talk so much about it because we experience such extremes of weather... and they seem to be getting even more extreme!

Comment on The English weather

It's the only topic of comversation that remains a constant with the English. Since man learned to communicate; from the time that the ice sheets last receded from the Island; even the Normans had to worry about it when crossing the Channel; to the present day English (3 Englishmen meet a fourth; they sit down to a game of Bridge; the conversation turns, inevitably to THE WEATHER). It will, no doubt , be be on the lips of the last Englishman standing, who won't even be concerned about his one-sided conversation - it's comfortable, it's a known entity, it's more English than fish-and-chips (which we seem to have got , in any case, from the Portuguese); it'll still be around when Blighty has sunk beneath the waves. Nae doubt.
