2. Well-dressing ceremonies - in which wells are decorated with designs created from flower petals - are held in most local villages during the spring and summer. The tradition is said to date from pagan times, when thanks was given for the purity of the water drawn from certain wells during the Black Death.
3. Twelve large limestone quarries operate in the Peak District. Tunstead, near Buxton, is one of the largest in Europe.
4. Nine Ladies is a stone circle located on Stanton Moor. Excavations have shown that there were once at least ten (and maybe 11) altogether.
5. The many gritstone outcrops, such as Stanage and the Roaches, are recognised as some of the finest rock-climbing sites in the world.
6. A new free self-guided trail launched in 2006, called Front Row of the Peak, is a guide to film and literature locations and includes settings for Pride And Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Peak Practice and The League Of Gentlemen.
7. The Peak District town of Glossop is the smallest town in England ever to have a top division professional football club. Glossop North End played in the Football League from 1898 to 1915 (the club is now semi-professional).
8. Dovedale was declared a National Nature Reserve on October 13, 2006.
9. Filming of the fictional Peak District village of Royston Vasey, from TV's The League Of Gentlemen, is done in the real-life town of Hadfield.
10. Charlotte Bronte based parts of Jane Eyre on places around Hathersage. The BBC used Haddon Hall, the North Lees estate and Dovedale as settings for its recent Jane Eyre adaptation.
