Comment on White Cliffs of Dover
They are unique. They are, psychologically, where the rest of the world ends and where England begins. In the mind of the weary traveller they are a comforting sight; they say "You are home". To the invader they are an iconic defence which time has proved cannot be overcome. They were here before we were and will still be here long after we are gone.

It's one of England's most famous natural landmarks and a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest. The White Cliffs of Dover stand guard at the Gateway to England where millions pass each year on their journey to or from the continent. In some places over 300 feet high, the White Cliffs are a symbol of the nation's strength against enemies and a reassuring sight to returning travellers, they have been immortalised in song, in literature and in art. It has rare flora and fauna with cross Channel views.

i would think that the icon needs no further recommendation than to ask any traveller either returning home or foreign visitor arriving via the south east of england or a veteran of WW2. The sense of relief upon seeing the white cliffs, of any flight crew during WW2 on returning home probably is beyond words!

What other landmark could be of such a welcome. Particularly to those brave men and women returning home by sea from the wars

I lived overseas quite a lot as my family are HMF. The cliffs were always a lovely sight when we were sailing home on leave. They (the Cliffs) are an icon of England

Dead from the waist up is he/she who does not feel something special on the ferry as the White Cliffs are glimpsed, with Dover Castle and the flag flying, and the tunnels in the cliffs from which Admiral Ramsey masterminded the wihdrawal from Dunkirk, the Naval defence of the UK in WW2 and the magnificent achievements of D-Day. Everything most English and British is here.
