Biography
All you need to know about the world's most respected tennis competition.
The Basics
Twenty-two gentlemen turned up in south-west London in 1877 to contest the title in the relatively new sport of lawn tennis, the emerging champion being Spencer Gore. Little could they have known that they were inaugurating what has gone on to be one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. The Wimbledon tournament is the British leg of the international Grand Slam series in tennis, and the only one still played on grass.
The Greatest Tennis Tournament in the World
One of the four major Grand Slam tennis tournaments, and the only one to be played on grass, the annual championships at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club in London SW19 is also one of the defining events of the English summer. Whether you queue for tickets on a hopeful weekday morning, or just sit at home with a long, clinky drink and the best view in the house, Wimbledon is an institution we couldn’t do without.
