2. Dark green and purple are the traditional Wimbledon colours, but from 2006 the officials, ball boys and ball girls were outfitted in new navy blue and cream uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren.
3. The Wimbledon Championships is run by a committee consisting of 12 All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) members and seven nominees from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
4. "Middle Sunday” is traditionally a rest day. However, rain has forced play on Middle Sunday three times in the Championship's history: in 1991, 1997 and 2004. Each time, Wimbledon staged a "People's Sunday", with unreserved seating and readily available, inexpensive tickets.
5. The 19 courts used for Wimbledon are all composed purely of rye grass. The speed and low bounce favours serve and volley players.
6. Wimbledon will host the Olympic tennis events in 2012.
7. Players bowed or curtsied to members of the royal family seated in the royal box upon entering or leaving Centre Court until 2003, when the President of the All England Club, HRH The Duke of Kent, decided players only need to if the Queen or Prince of Wales is present.
8. During matches, female players are always referred to as "Miss" or "Mrs" - but the title "Mr" is never used for male players.
9. According to the BBC Sport website, Monica Seles was once nearly prevented from getting on court in time for a match by Martina Navratilova's pet Chihuahua. According to legend, the dog was standing guard in front of Navratilova's locker, which was next to Seles'. Every time Seles reached for a racquet, the dog barked - so she had to wait for the owner to return before she could get on court!
