York Minster

Comment on York Minster

As the largest gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe, set in a stunning English medieval city, York Minster is the ultimate example of an iconic religious building and testament to the skills and dedication of generations of craftsmen.

Minster/Cathedral

There is no actuall difference between a Minster and a Cathedral - they are the same thing. The reason York is a Minster is one of those funny English stories which I have forgotten, but it goes back to the original church which stood on the site in 800 I think.

I have a question. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between a Minster and a Cathedral? I did know the answer at one time, but cannot recall it. I used to visit the Minster often, as I lived not far from York. We always stayed for Evensong - it made our day complete!!!Like the idea of "12 o'clock prayers" where everyone stops their busy lives for a moment of prayer. I live in Canada now. The Mystery Plays performed in the Minister in 2000 is something I will remember forever!!!!!

Nice church but 90% of people wouldn't be able to place it - a national treasure - but not an icon.

One of the most famous - and most beautiful - public buildings in Britain. When people around the world think of England, or of York(shire), one of the images that must come into their mind is that of a Gothic Cathedral, of which York Minster is the supreme example.

The bell Great Peter is in fact 10.8 tons, not 10.8 tonnes as mentioned. Since 2000 Great Peter became the deepest toned clock bell in the UK when a new clock and 6 quarter bells were added to celebrate the Queen Mother's 100th birthday. Inspite of weighing over 10 tons Great Peter can be swung and rung by one person.
