Comment on The Angel of the North
The artist who created it said that it would turn bronzy and smooth but in fact the only smooth place is on its feet were it has been "buffered" by people sitting on it! The rest is rusty and needs to be torn down and replaced. Possibly with a new statue...I hope the council will not let us be fleeced again!

Comment on St George's Flag
Whilst growing up the only flag I identified with was the Union Jack. I would not have been able to tell you the name of the English flag, thanks to my Catholic school education! Whether we like it or not it was, and is, our national flag. It does not belong to Protestants it does not belong to Catholics and it does not belong to the BNP - it belongs to the people of England. Ashamed of it? Or ashamed of yourself? For all our faults and bloody histories I LOVE ENGLAND!

Comment on The FA Cup
I used to love the FA Cup Final, but nowadays it's been ruined by Yank-type razzmatazz, especially after the presentation of the trophy. Even having two 'unfashionable' clubs in this year's final couldn't make it enjoyable.

Boring books, filmed in New Zealand. I voted "no".

Comment on Magna Carta
NOTE: MC was never signed by King John - he merely put his Great Seal to it.

Comment on Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Savoy Operas'
Yes, these are quintessentially English. Poking fun at ourselves to mirth, merriment and a great tune.

Comment on Church Bells
Church bells are just as common in France and Belgium, and for all I know elsewhere, as they are in Britain.

Comment on Worcestershire Sauce
Totally British, and always a joy to hear a foreigner pronounce its name.

Comment on the 1951 Apprentice
What happy memories! No replacement units in those days everything had to be stripped of and overhauled on the bench, water pumps, dynamos, starters, mastercylinders, wheel cylinders, gearbox, clutch and differentials. Everything was repaired if possible and it was a dirty smelly environment, and I reckon even now I could still overhaul a water pump and adjust the valve clearances with the engine running as before.

Comment on Liverpool Collegiate School
Hello all, I've just stumbled onto this website by accident and I am fascinated. I was a pupil at the Collegiate from 1967 to 1972 and I remember my time there with great fondness, although I don't remember feeling that at the time! I think I was remembered by some of the masters (and my fellow pupils) as being the worst behaved pupil ever. Not something I am proud of now though. Every time I drive past the old place I can still see the VIP, Johnny Gauler, swishing one of his fine selection of canes in readiness of bestowing his own particular brand of justice upon some terrified 2nd year pupil - usually me. If only today's youth could be simarlarly chastised! Despite my many clashes with authority there I have many good memories of the school and feel nothing but affection for the place. My only regrets are that I didnt do the old place justice and left with only a few qualifications. I did eventually grow up and went to college and subsequently JMU where I did a Business and Law Degree as a mature student aged 40. I bet that will shock my old teachers if they could read this. Anyway, it's been nice to reminisce, thanks for reading this. Kevin Doherty, 1967/1972.
