The achievements of Dame Judi Dench

Dame Judi Dench has made a big impression on Bob Hoskins. The pair starred in the 2005 film Mrs Henderson Presents – and Bob was a key player in persuading her to take the role. “They came, Bob and Norma [Heyman, producer]. We had lunch and they explained the story and I said yes before the end of lunch,” said Judi in an interview by Rebecca Murray for movies.about.com

Tipped for an Oscar nomination, Mrs Henderson Presents tells the true story of a widow, Laura Henderson, who bought London’s Windmill Theatre in the 1930s and controversially showed female nudes on stage. She hired Vivian Van Damm, played by Bob Hoskins, to manage the theatre.

Bob was also interviewed by Rebecca Murray after the film was released. “What you see on screen is the natural relationship between Judi and myself. I adore her. I don’t know what she thinks of me, but I adore her. She’s a very good actress.”

Bob Hoskins

Bob Hoskins hit the small screen with his role in Dennis Potter’s Pennies From Heaven in 1978 and the big screen as a gangster in The Long Good Friday in 1980. His mother was a German Romany and The Raggedy Rawney, the children’s film he wrote, directed, and starred in, was based on the stories his grandmother used to tell him. His gravelly voice, Cockney accent and stocky build (he describes himself as “five-foot-six and cubic”) make the award-winning actor instantly recognisable.
