Weather symbol on the BBC for 'light rain showers'

“When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather,” said Dr Johnson. That, he might have added, is one of the benefits of living in a changeable climate. We never run short of something to talk about. Our national obsession with the weather is reflected in the amount of TV time given over to the weather forecast, and in the number of hits the BBC Weather website receives every day. Possibly the most familiar (if not exactly the best-loved) symbol to appear on the weather map is the one representing ‘light showers’. Its image of the sun’s rays peeping hopefully out from behind an obstinately dripping black cloud sums it all up. We are quite as used to seeing this symbol in the middle of August as in the depth of winter. Some would say these halfway-house conditions are mirrored in the moderate, level-headed temperament of the people! Would you agree?
