Wembley Stadium

Comment on Wembley Stadium

The imminent return of the FA Cup Final to the new Wembley Stadium has, for me, simply re-opened the wounds of anger and bitterness I felt about the demolition of the old stadium. I never, ever thought they would demolish Wembley...it was a national monument, and to tear it down was as unthinkable to me as tearing down St Paul's Cathedral or Buckingham Palace. It was the place where England won the World Cup for the first and only time, for God's sake! For that alone, the stadium should have been heritage listed.

The white horse at the 1923 FA Cup final symbolises what football matches meant then and even now.

In August 1987 Michel Platini realised his dream by playing at Wembley in a Rest of the Word XI against England. When one of the worlds greatest footballers viewed Wembley as a pinnacle it shows what an Icon those Twin Towers really were - particulary when Platini was French!

It was the scene of one of this nation's greatest sporting triumphs, winning the World Cup in 1966 and is the focal point for our national sport, football.

Its where England won the World Cup in 1966. And some great football matches between scotland and England were held.

The Cathedral of Football. Like most things the home of a global fascination is in England. The Empire Stadium, as it was known, very English.
