Bacon sandwich

The undoing of many a committed vegetarian, the bacon sandwich, butty or sarnie must be one of the best comfort foods ever. It’s quick to prepare, a staple part of the breakfast menu at the traditional English caff, and you can add your own mark by adding tomato sauce, brown sauce, egg, tomato – or even marmalade, according to one recipe we found. Get the bacon sizzling in a pan, while you saw off a couple fresh bread doorsteps. Lather the bread with butter, slap on the bacon while it’s hot as hell, and eat with two hands. Divine.

According to the British Sandwich Association (BSA), bacon is one of the most popular fillings in the pre-prepared sandwich market – it’s in fifth position, behind chicken, fish, cheese and ham. As far as the home-made sandwich is concerned, the bacon is hot and it’s in fifth position again, behind cheese, ham, poultry and jam.

Whether it's a couple of greasy rashers between two pieces of white bread or a gourmet delight stuffed with crispy rashers, grainy mustard, tomato ketchup and whole grain bread - it's the classic morning-after-the-night-before start to a day. . Our friends here in the US just don't get the concept or the craving. We can only buy smoked, streaky bacon in supermarkets, thank goodness for our local British Shop and their stock of suitable rashers.

A Bacon Sanga, as we called them, was always a delight while growing up, and now my husband enjoys them as much as I do!!

Always referred to as a bacon buttie. It's the one thing guaranteed to make even hardened vegetarians feel hungry.
