Brighton Pride March

Break out your glitter, your platforms and your biggest wig… Brighton’s Gay Pride Carnival Parade is THE event of the summer. The 2005 Festival attracted 120,000 people from all over the world and the Carnival Parade featured more than 40 floats and “walking tableaux”. The Parade starts at the seafront and winds its way through the city centre ending up with a huge party in Preston Park. The spectators that line the streets are often as outrageously dressed as the Paraders, but don’t feel any pressure to dress up if you don’t fancy it – anything goes! The Parade has been happening rain (and, believe me, 2002 saw some pretty serious rain!) or shine since 1992 and has grown into an event that gets the whole city celebrating. It is totally free, encouraging the culture of inclusiveness and acceptance of which Brighton & Hove is proud. As one participant says: “We were proud to represent our community, proud to be from Brighton, proud to be who we are and I felt proud of myself.”

Not sure why Brighton Pride march has been singled out here. Personally I find Pride marches embarrasing and completely unrepresentative of most gay people in the UK. These marches perpetuate the camp and OTT stereotypes of gay people. A pride march is not an icon of England.

How odd that Brighton should get Pride March iconic status! I've been on the London Pride marches on and off since I was in my teens, and I'm in my mid-forties now, and no, I'm not a Londoner. If anyone says "Pride March" to me, I think of the London one.
