Canal Street, Manchester

Is this an icon?

or

Canal Street, Manchester

One of the most famous gay landmarks in the country, this canalside street was made famous by the groundbreaking TV production 'Queer As Folk'. It is also one of the most European and cosmopolitan streets in Manchester. With buildings dating back to the industrial revolution, this area is a good example of healthy English regeneration and a sign of a thriving gay community.

Why is the fact that the area is frequented by homosexuals iconic? I have no problem with anyones sexuality but don't see why this makes an area iconic when there are lots of areas with gay links, or black links, or whatever other speciality you care to mention. I wouldn't nominate Chapletown in Leeds as being the haunt of hetrosexuals so why Canal Street?
