Castle Howard

Castle Howard in Yorkshire is one of Britain's most famous historic houses and is still home to the Howard family. Perhaps best known as one of the settings for the television series 'Brideshead Revisited', construction started at the end of the 17th Century and was the first commission of Sir John Vanbrugh - at that time he was only known for his plays. Later additions were made until the 19th Century. In the 1940s a fire seriously damaged the house, since which restoration has been, and continues to be, undertaken to restore the house to its former glory.

Castle Howard has been open to the public since 1952, and was the winner of the Yorkshire Tourist Board Visitor Attraction of the Year award for 2005.

Castle Howard is a magnificent privately owned Estate set in the Howardian Hills Area of Natural Beauty. I am fortunate enough to live close by and visit frequently to walk the splended grounds and visit the many exciting outlets including a new Chocolate Shop! I believe Castle Howard is one of Yorkshire's treasures.

Enthralling! The spirit and warmth cannot be conveyed by pictures. One must visit to experience this glorious estate that is second only to Windsor Castle. My husband and I were fortunate enough to visit in May 2006. The grounds and estate are very well maintained, (which is not the case with all grand estates). We especially enjoyed feeding the peacocks that roam the grounds with peacock food provided by the gift shop. The staff is friendly and well informed, from the ticket sales and shop staff to the tour guides and groundskeepers. We spent a week in the Yorkshire Dales with Castle Howard our last stop before going on to London. It was our first trip to this the Dales, but will not be our last. Is this magnificent estate an icon of Yorkshire? Yes. The warmth, charm and spirit in all that is Castle Howard make it a Yorkshire icon.

I have lived all over the UK but Castle Howard is for my wife and I, together with our 3 year old son, the best place to visit. Both the house and the surrounding countryside is wonderfull and sums up what we love about the English countryside!
